Understanding TMJ and jaw discomfort
TMJ means temporomandibular joint: the joint connecting your jaw to your skull. TMD refers to disorders affecting the jaw joints and chewing muscles.
Jaw discomfort can have different causes. Clicking without pain is common and does not necessarily need treatment.
Your RMT assesses relevant soft tissues, movement and symptom patterns to determine whether massage therapy fits your needs. This does not replace a dental or medical diagnosis.
Painful clicking, locking or changes in your bite may call for assessment by a dentist or another appropriate healthcare professional.

Common signs we assess
Your RMT considers your symptoms, relevant movement and daily activities before recommending care.

Jaw muscle tension
Where you feel soreness and how symptoms affect daily activities.

Chewing comfort
How eating and talking affect your symptoms.
Jaw movement: comfort when opening and closing your mouth.

Facial tension: associated symptoms and whether other assessment is needed.

Neck movement: relevant muscle tension and movement concerns around the neck.

Recurring symptoms: your symptom patterns, previous care and goals for the visit.
Your treatment plan
Your assessment guides the proposed care. Your RMT explains options, expected benefits, possible risks and alternatives, and checks your consent.
1. Discuss
Review symptoms, health history, previous care and goals.
2. Assess
Examine relevant soft tissues and movement within massage therapy scope.
3. Plan
Agree on appropriate treatment, goals and practical home-care guidance.
4. Reassess
Review your response and adapt the plan or recommend other care.
What treatment may include
✓ Massage therapy for relevant jaw, facial or neck muscle tension
✓ Education about activities associated with your symptoms
✓ Individualized movement or home-care guidance
✓ Strategies for comfort with everyday activities
✓ Reassessment of your goals and response
✓ Referral or coordination with dental or medical care when indicated
Care depends on your assessment, preferences and consent. Results vary. You can decline a technique or stop treatment at any time.
Home care
Exercises should suit your symptoms and movement tolerance. Your RMT can discuss appropriate home care and how to monitor your response. Avoid forcing painful movement. Report worsening symptoms or changes in function.
How RMT care fits
RMT care may address associated soft-tissue tension and support comfortable movement. It does not correct dental alignment, reposition a jaw disc or replace dental treatment.
Your therapist will discuss whether the proposed care fits their scope and your needs. A dentist or another healthcare professional may be better placed to assess some symptoms.
Your first appointment
We begin with your jaw symptoms, relevant history, previous care and goals. Assessment follows with your consent.
Your RMT explains the findings and proposed plan. Treatment may begin when appropriate and with your agreement. Bring any relevant recommendations from your dentist or other healthcare professional.
Goals we can discuss
✓ Chewing comfort
✓ Jaw movement tolerance

Questions about TMJ assessment
What does a TMJ assessment involve? Your RMT reviews your symptoms, relevant health history and goals, then assesses relevant soft tissues and movement. Findings guide a treatment discussion or referral when appropriate. This is not a dental diagnosis.
Can massage therapy help jaw tension? Massage therapy may help some people with associated muscular tension and discomfort. Whether it is appropriate depends on your assessment, and results vary.
Does jaw clicking mean I need treatment? Clicking without pain does not necessarily require treatment. Pain, locking or changes in function deserve discussion with a dentist or another appropriate healthcare professional.
How many visits will I need? There is no fixed number for everyone. Your RMT discusses a plan and reassesses progress with you rather than guaranteeing a course length or outcome.
Will treatment correct my bite? Massage therapy does not correct dental alignment or replace dental care. A dentist can assess bite-related concerns.
Will I receive exercises or home care? Your plan may include individualized movement or home-care guidance when appropriate. Recommendations depend on your symptoms, goals and response.
Which appointment should I book? Choose Book TMJ Assessment for jaw-focused RMT assessment and treatment planning. If you are unsure, call 289-895-8181 for guidance or select an Initial Assessment. If Noterro shows no suitable appointment, contact the clinic.
Is the appointment covered by insurance? Coverage depends on your benefits plan. Confirm the service, practitioner and any referral requirements with your insurer before booking. Do not assume all TMJ-related care is covered.
